Conditions for Fungal Growth
Fungi grow well in an environment that is has adequate nutrients plus plenty of moisture. Food kept as well long or that is has been left from from damp conditions offers some good substrate for fungal growth. Some fungi are cold tolerant and can even grow on old food in a refrigerator. Some foods with excessive sugar or salt concentrations will be hard for most fungi to colonize, except most kinds of bread, fruits plus vegetables are ideal. Most food colonizing fungi are molds that produce a white fuzzy development. Within some cases the fungi are yeasts, which variety small wet-looking colonies.
Colonization
Fungal colonization of food customarily starts with a spore or many spores landing on the food. Spores consistently circulate within the air, plus it doesn't take long for single to find its way on to every vulnerable food. Once any spore lands, if the food is moist or if the humidity is huge, it can germinate and start to send out hyphae. Hyphae are filamentous fungal cells that distribute away and absorb nutriments from the substrate.
